An Open Chair Story

By Allison G. Carlson

Have you ever longed to share your most personal thoughts with someone?
Someone you could trust and lay bare your soul?
Someone you could always count on?
Someone that no matter what time of the day or night would always be available to listen?
That someone is as close as the chair sitting next to you.

An open chair is all you need to invite God into your life. All you have to do is sit down, listen and know that your heart is being heard.

The idea for this chair came to me as I watched one of my loved ones struggle as they lived out their final hours. The chair idea is an extension of the story you are about to read.

There was a man who lay dying in the hospital. The man did not have a close relationship with God. Everyday a friend would come to visit the dying man. The friend knew the dying man did not have a solid relationship with God. When the friend would visit the dying man he would always place a chair beside his bed. He told the dying man that God always sits in the chair beside him, ready to listen.
Each time the friend would visit he would always remind the dying man about the chair.

One day the friend came to visit but was stopped by a nurse as he approached the room. The nurse said that the dying man had passed away. She also said, “When I walked into his room and found he had passed, I noticed that his hand was lying on the chair you always left beside his bed.”
At that moment the friend knew the dying man had reached out to God to take that heavenly walk home. We need a chair in life as well as death.

It seems life gives us many opportunities to have conversations with God.
We need a chair by our bed, in our car, on our desk, in our children’s rooms, anywhere we need to be reminded of God’s Presence. With this small chair big things will come.

With inner peace comes love and with love all things are possible.
